The manuscripts document William Clarke's career as secretary, record-keeper, and collector, and relate primarily to his duties as secretary to George Monck in Scotland from 1654-1660. The papers highlight the general political developments of the 1640s to 1660s, and in particular the political role of the Army in 1647-1649 and again in 1659-1660; the internal organization and personnel of the Army; and the English military occupation of Scotland, and republican rule there during the forced union of 1652-1660.
